Abraham Maslow - Most Well Known Psychologist In Motivation
Abraham Maslow is probably the best known of any psychologists that investigated human motivation. While his work did not specifically address leadership issues per se, his hierarchy of pychological needs is the best know model of human motivation, despite the fact that his methodology was flawed, and his conclusion that motivations were hierarchical in nature was incorrect.
That hasn't stopped people from adopting his model. The model itself, which is amazingly simple, has attracted a following around the world.
His work was a product of his times. He was part of a movement in Psychology called "The Third Force", but most know it as Humanistic Psychology, and emerged as a result of dissatisfaction with the behaviorist models of the times ( e.g. B.F Skinner).
Whether it has real value in today's world is questionable, and in fact some think it is incredibly misleading, but he is still best know for his use of the term "self-actualization".
While Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and the research methods he used to derive his conclusions were flawed, his biggest contribution was to popularize human motivation as an important process to look at within our modern organizations.
