The Leadership Library

Effective leadership is one of those areas where we "know a great" deal, and we know next to nothing. We've pulled together a large number of articles, advice and hints and tips on effective leadership and leader development, trying to incorporate as many different viewpoints as possible.

Why Understanding Many Perspectives On Leadership Is Important

  • There is no ONE way to lead that is successful over every context. That's the ONE thing we know for sure about leadership. That means LEADERSHIP FLEXIBILITY becomes the key, and you need leaders who can apply different perspectives so they can succeed in different situations.
  • Leader's need multiple "leadership styles". Much is said about leadership styles, and it's true that leaders tend to have a "way of working", a preferred way of interacting. However, leaders who cannot step outside their "preferred style" fail often, when situations change. As demographics, goals, and the market changes, effective leaders need to be able to adopt different styles. After all, they aren't fixed for life. Again, flexibility is the key.
  • Leadership development involves teaching leader flexibility. Clearly, if we teach future leaders to lead in ONE specific way, from one specific leadership style, we limit their ability to succeed. If you are a leader now the most important thing to develop is a broad understanding of as many diverse theories, and leadership behaviors out there.
